In 2011-12 the government launched its Pupil Premium funding. This money is sent to schools and academies based on the number of pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). Since 2012-13 it has been expanded to include all children who have been eligible for FSM within the last six years.
This money is allocated to initiatives to ensure these pupils reach their full potential, both academically and socially.

Our initial Pupil Premium funding for 2014-2015 was £110800, which has been allocated to teaching and teaching assistant hours to enable the academy to provide specific interventions which our children need to make progress both academically and social and emotionally.
In addition to the initial funding, the academy is now in receipt of an additional £34376. The academy is seeking to appoint a qualified teacher to deliver specific English and maths booster lessons in addition to their usual lessons, to enable children within our vulnerable groups to make the significant and accelerated progress required to achieve the government standards at the end of KS2. Standards at the end of KS2 were below the government’s targets and as a result, the academy has a clear focus of improvement to drive standards in English and Maths across the school.
The interventions we have planned for are:
- Literacy: Read, Write Inc one to one phonics, Lexia for KS2 pupils, additional daily reading
- Numeracy: springboard (small group targeted support) and wave 3 (individual targeted support)
- Specific English and Maths targeted support for children to enable them to achieve the government’s required standard by the end of KS2.
- Thrive (social and emotional support). Specific staff have been trained in order to deliver thrive support to children in afternoons.
- Fine motor skills.
The expected impact for this year is to increase the proportion of Pupil Premium pupils making at least expected progress in reading, writing and maths to our target of 69%.
Pupil Premium 2013-2014
Pupil Premium funding for 2013-2014 was £74,000 which was allocated to provide seven Teaching Assistants across the school to deliver:
- Thrive to children who struggle with social or emotional issues. (Approximately £70,000)
- Lexia to support children to improve their reading skills.
It also subsidised trips or visits for children across the school to enable them to access wider experiences.
The impact of last year’s pupil premium funding with regards to Lexia was extremely positive with pupils making accelerated progress ranging from 2 months to 45 months. The upper end of the range has been a result of regular Lexia sessions for children needing support with reading. As children can use Lexia at home, support from parents has also been beneficial.
The impact of providing Thrive across the school has enabled:
- children to become more positive and emotionally stable in school, resulting in far fewer emotional outbursts
- children to be more able to learn in lessons with teachers being more able to teach as a result of fewer emotional outbursts
- staff to have a better understanding as to why children display behaviours seen in school.
- a 17% increase in children’s social and emotional security and wellbeing.
This is something as an academy our staff feel has been a positive addition and is something we are committed to continuing. With trained staff moving on to new posts in other schools, this year, we have trained new staff at a cost of approximately £500 from this year’s budget and are using the funding to support them running Thrive during afternoons on a regular and consistent basis.
